Printemps 2016. Michel est en fauteuil roulant. Mais il continue à rêver d’un espace boisé pleine nature où les chevaux et les abeilles, les papillons et les grenouilles, les hérissons et les canards, fleurs et fruits auraient leur place et tous ceux qui les aiment.
Un entrepreneur local du bâtiment me propose un terrain de cinq hectares et demi de friche dans la commune de Hourtin, à Louley. Comme ce n’est pas constructible, le terrain en tant qu'investissement ne l’intéresse plus. Je connais l’endroit l’ayant sillonné pendant des années à cheval. Il y a du bois mixte de pins, de chênes et de châtaigniers avec de nombreux chênes majestueux. C'est un coin dont j’ai toujours rêvé, juste assez éloigné de la route pour ne pas supporter le trafic, à deux pas du marais qui fait partie aujourd’hui de la Réserve naturelle nationale des marais et dunes de Hourtin gérée par l’ONF. Et ... c'est à proximité du lac et de l'océan !
Plus de la moitié du terrain est en friche jonchée de branches mortes, de souches des arbres que la tempête du siècle puis la tempête Klaus avaient fait tomber. Beaucoup de bois non exploitable pourrit sur place. Il n’y a que fougères, ronces, ajoncs et brandes. La régénération naturelle semble ne pas vouloir se faire.
J’accepte. On est en train d’y faire des coupes, de déboiser ce qui n’était pas tombé dans les tempêtes du début de notre millénaire. J’accepte le prix fort qu’on me demande : je casserai toutes mes économies pour réaliser le projet, mais je demande que les coupes cessent. On me le promet et nous signons le compromis.
How it all started
We are spring 2016. Michel is in a wheel-chair but he keeps dreaming of a place in the woods where he can create a protected area of biodiversity where horses and bees, butterflies and frogs, hedgehogs and ducks, flowers and fruits can all have their place and share it with those who love and care about nature.
A local building contractor offers me to buy a piece of land of almost 14 acres of fallow woodland at Louley near Hourtin. Since there is no way of turning it into a settlement and making money by building and selling houses, it does not interest him any longer. I know the spot since I used to ride my horses there in the woods and marshes. It’s a mixed wood of pines, chestnut trees and oaks some of which are majestic. The place is a dream, just far enough away from the road so as not to be bothered by any traffic, near to the moor and bog-forest that is now part of the French national nature reserve of the moors and dunes of Hourtin controlled by the French national forests office ONF. And it is near to the lake and the ocean.
More than half of the terrain is fallow land full of dead wood, tree trunks and stumps left rotting there after hurricanes had struck at the beginning of the new millennium. There is nothing else growing but fern and bramble, gorse and heath, with no signs of natural regeneration of the woodland except a few young pines and oaks striving to survive.
I accept the offer. They are about to cut down the rest of the trees still standing there. I accept the high price the seller wants for this piece of land and ask him to stop cutting the trees. I know that I will have to invest all I have for the project and I am willing to do so, but I want him to leave those trees alive. He agrees and we sign.
Wie alles begann ...
Ostern 2016. Michel ist an den Rollstuhl gefesselt aber er verliert die Hoffnung nicht, eines Tages einen Lebensraum im Wald zu schaffen, wo Platz ist für Pferde und Bienen, Schmetterlinge und Frösche, Igel und Enten, Blütenwiesen und Bäume, Sträucher und Früchte. Und für die Menschen die all dies lieben.
Ein ortsansässiger Bauunternehmer macht mir ein Angebot für ein Terrain von fünfeinhalb Hektar Land in Louley bei Hourtin. Da dieses Land nicht bebaubar ist, hat es für ihn als Investition alles Interesse verloren. Ich kenne dieses Fleckchen Erde gut, da Ich hier jahrelang zu Pferd unterwegs war. Ein Traum von Mischwald aus Pinien, Kastanienbäumen und Eichen, darunter ein paar majestätisch uralte. Gerade weit genug ab von der Strasse um von jedem Verkehr verschont zu bleiben, nur hundert Meter entfernt vom Moorwald des Staatsforstes und dem staatlichen Naturschutzgebiet der Moore und Dünen von Hourtin. Und nicht weit vom See und vom Meer entfernt.
Der grösste Teil des angebotenen Geländes liegt brach nach Windbruch durch die Stürme zu Beginn unseres Jahrtausends. Überall nur totes Holz, Äste, Stubben und Wurzeln unter Farn, und Dornen, Strauchheide und Stechginster. Es gibt kaum Anzeichen auf natürliche Regeneration des Baumbestandes.
Ich nehme das Angebot an. Man ist dabei, abzuholzen und den verbleibenden Baumbestand zu fällen. Ich akzeptieren den Preis auch wenn er überzogen ist, aber der mann Weiss, was die Lage wert sein kann. Ich weiss, dass ich für das Projet alle meine Rücklagen locker machen muss aber es ist es wert. Ich mache zur Auflage, dass keine weiteren Bäume gefällt werden und nur das liegende Holz entfernt wird. Wir einigen uns darauf und der Vertrag steht.

So sah es Anfangs aus : eine Wüste aus Farn, überall wenigstens 1,50 Meter hoch. Darunter ersticken die jungen Bäume, können nicht hochwachsen oder werden von den Hirschen verspeist.
A la signature de l’acte je découvre que contrairement à ce qui avait été convenu, le vendeur avait poursuivi ses coupes et fait abattre les plus gros chênes dont certains vénérables. Pour certains d’entre eux il fallait s’y mettre à deux pour en faire le tour. Ils étaient sains, les 37 souches des plus gros en témoignaient bel et bien. Un massacre mais imparable sur le plan légal.
It is too late to change anything when I discover that contrary to our mutual agreement the seller had continued harvesting the oaks and cut down even the eldest of them some of which were so enormous that it took two men to surround or hug them. None of them needed to be cut, they were all healthy as the stumps clearly showed. 37 giant oaks had been cut just for firewood! A massacre.
Zu spät muss ich feststellen, dass unsere Vereinbarung nicht vom Verkäufer eingehalten wurde und er weiter gefällt hat. Unter anderem die 37 riesigen Eichen die so dick waren, dass man sie nur zu zweit umarmen konnte. Sie waren gesund wie man es an den Stubben erkennen konnte. Gefällt für Brennholz. Ein Massaker.

Von den alten wunderbaren Eichen sind nur noch die Stuben da, und wir haben die traurige Aufgabe sie roden zu müssen.
Il va falloir replanter.
Michel a regagné des forces et est pleinement partant pour l’aventure : il s’agit de recréer un espace boisé à essences multiples obéissant à un cahier des charges complexe pour répondre à tous nos objectifs.
Avant de replanter, il est impératif de nettoyer le terrain, de broyer les résidus de bois mort, voire de désoucher à des endroits stratégiques où les souches pourraient être une gêne voire constituer un danger. Il faut clôturer car la pression des cerfs dans le secteur est énorme et interdirait des plantations des jeunes arbres feuillus dont ils raffoleraient. Il faut assainir le terrain en recreusant les fossés qui le drainent.
En novembre 2017, la première tranche de nos travaux préparatoires est accomplie. La partie du terrain qui fera l’objet du reboisement est entourée d’une clôture anti-cerfs de 2 m de haut sur une longueur de 1200 m. Sur un côté nous avons réalisé, en parallèle, un passage nord-sud pour animaux et personnes : promeneurs, chercheurs de champignons, chasseurs, VTTistes ou encore cavaliers. Un passage qu’emprunte aussi le gibier comme nous aurons l’occasion de le constater.
Entretemps, une tempête a fait tomber la plupart des derniers pins et nous décidons d’enlever tous les résineux qui subsistent pour donner la possibilité aux feuillus de profiter de leur mieux et de repeupler l’espace bois.
C'est parti. On peut planter.

Michel has recovered and is ready to throw himself head over heels into this new adventure : creating a deciduous forest with various tree species according to our intentions and the project’s requirements.
Before starting to plant, we have to clean up, crush the dead wood and branches and remove trunks and stumps. We have to put up an almost 7 feet high wire mesh fence in order to protect our future plantations from the deer. We have to clear the land, level embankments and clean out ditches that are overgrown with moor grass, fern and thorns.
November 2017. The first stage of preparatory work is done. We have put up over 1300 yards of solid anti-deer fence On one of the sides we have created a north-south passage for animals or persons be they wanderers, mushroom pickers, hunters, bikers or horse-riders. We have noticed that animals frequently use the passage.
In the meantime, another hurricane has broken down most of the pines that were left and we decide to cut down all the remaining softwood and give the remaining oaks and other leaf trees the best chances to grow and develop their strengths.
All we have to do now is ... plant our trees!
Es nun unsere Aufgabe sein, Bäume zu pflanzen.
Michel ist wieder auf den Beinen und kommt zu neuen Kräften. Louley gibt ihm unglaublichen Auftrieb und er kann es nicht abwarten, mit der Arbeit zu beginnen. Es ist nicht das Geringste, das uns erwartet. Immerhin geht es darum, einen Bestand neu zu schaffen mit verschiedenen Baumarten, die unseren Zielen der Artenvielfalt entsprechen.
Vor dem Pflanzen aber muss das Land hergerichtet werden, totes Holz, Äste, vermodernde Stämme und Stubben müssen zermulcht und Gräben neu gezogen werden. Vor allem aber brauchen wir einen zwei Meter hohen Maschendrahtzaun speziell gegen Hirsche, ansonsten haben junge Bäume keinerlei Chancen.
Im November 2017 ist die erste Tranche der Vorbereitungsarbeiten erfolgreich beendet. Das Gelände ist nun umzäunt mit einem 1200 m langen und 2 m hohen Wildschutz-Zaun. Auf einer Seite haben wir darüberhinaus einen frei zugänglichen Weg angelegt, um Tieren und Menschen ob es nun Wanderer, Pilzesucher, Jäger, Biker oder auch Reiter sein mögen, den Weg durch die Natur zwischen Nord und Süd nicht zu verbauen. Wir konnten feststellen, dass das Wild den Weg stets benutzt.
Inzwischen hat ein weiterer Sturm die meisten der verbliebenen Pinien umgehauen und wir entscheiden, alles Nadelholz zu entfernen und dadurch Platz zu schaffen für Laubholz und den Eiche, die auf Licht warten, bessere Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten zu geben.
Jetzt brauchen wir bloss noch zu pflanzen …
