Plantons, plantons : Trees for two and two for trees ...

Trees for two and two for trees ...

"Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree!". This is what a wise man said. Whether or not it was Luther who said so, it surely is a wise thing to say.

Around the future round-pens and working areas for the horses, we have planted various kinds of leaf trees to complete the remaining oaks.

In November 2017 we started to reforest the wasteland with special emphasis on the need to create biodiversity that had gone lost. In two years of intense effort we have managed to put into the earth and make grow more than six hundred tree plants, whether tall or tiny, as well as bushes, flowers and climbing plants hoping they will soon make the fence disappear under leaves, flowers and fruit.

Here we transform part of the wasteland into an orchard with integrated forest nursery ...

Within only two years we have managed to introduce an important number of tree species that are spread across the first plantation area of 6 acres according to their various needs and affinities. Some of them, like the birch trees, are pioneers, others form a wind breaking screen, still others an orchard combined with a forest nursery. Not to forget the baby oaks and chestnut trees that have grown all by themselves here or there through natural regeneration. We include them in our reforestation scheme and give them just as much care as for the others.

Of course, six acres is not much, but one tree is more than no tree at all, and a few hundred trees start to make a difference even on our tiny scale! Even if it is only because we believe in what we are doing and wish to share ...

Even a tiny cutting will become a tree. All you have to do is believe in it, care for them, wait and observe.

It is important to know that planting is just the first step! For several years it will be necessary to cut back the young plants so that they can develop into strong harmonious trees. For three years you are bound to water the young trees for their roots need time to develop and reach the water reserves deep down in the earth that dries out severely every summer. Watering more than six hundred plants once or twice a week from April to October on six acres of land, I leave you work out the time and energy this takes!

And please tell me whether you think it’s worth it …

I say yes. Definitely yes.

… Ich sage : ja! Tausendmal ja.
